    Experimental Results for Temporally Overlapping Pulses from Quantel EverGreen 200 Laser

    This report will detail the experimental results and observations obtained while investigating the feasibility of temporally overlapping the two laser pulses from a Quantel EverGreen 200 Laser. This laser was specifically designed for Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) applications and operate by emitting two 532 nm laser pulses that are seperated by an adjustable finite time (typically on the order of ten to hundreds of microseconds). However, the use of this model laser has found recent application for Pressure Sensitive Paint (PSP) testing, especially for rotorcraft research. For this testing, it is desired to only use one laser pulse. While this is easily done by only firing one of the laser heads, more excitation energy could conceivably be had if both laser heads are fired with zero pulse separation. In addition, recently large field-of-view PIV measurements have become possible and need ever increasing laser power to illuminate the larger areas. For this work, two different methods of timing the laser are investigated using both a traditional power meter to monitor laser power as well as a fast photodiode to determine pulse separation. The results are presented here as well as some simple implications for PIV experiments using these methods

    Transition Detection at Cryogenic Temperatures Using a Carbon-Based Resistive Heating Layer Coupled with Temperature Sensitive Paint

    This paper will highlight the development and application of a carbon-based resistive heating layer for use in transition detection at cryogenic temperatures at the National Transonic Facility (NTF) for full-flight Reynolds number testing. This study builds upon previous work that was successfully demonstrated at the 0.3-m Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel on a smaller-scale airfoil shape of regular geometry. However, the test performed at the NTF involved a semispan wing with complex geometry and significantly larger than previous tests. This required the development of new coatings to provide suitable resistances to provide adequate heating rates for transition detection. Successful implementation of this technology has the ability to greatly enhance transition detection experiments at cryogenic temperatures as well as reducing perturbation in the tunnel caused by more traditional transition detection methods

    Experimental Investigation of the NASA Common Research Model with a Natural Laminar Flow Wing in the NASA Langley National Transonic Facility

    A test of the new NASA Common Research Model with a Natural Laminar Flow (CRMNLF) semispan wing in the NASA Langley National Transonic Facility (NTF) was completed in October 2018. The main focus of this test was the evaluation of the extent of laminar flow on the CRM-NLF wing at various Reynolds numbers and test conditions. During this test, data were acquired at chord Reynolds numbers from 10 to 30 million and at Mach numbers ranging from 0.84 to 0.86. This investigation provided valuable insight into the necessary procedures for laminar flow testing in the NTF. It also significantly advanced the new carbonbased heating layer technique to improve the quality of transition visualization data from temperature sensitive paint (TSP) in a cryogenic wind tunnel

    Preliminary Results from an Experimental Assessment of a Natural Laminar Flow Design Method

    A 5.2% scale semispan model of the new Common Research Model with Natural Laminar Flow (CRM-NLF) was tested in the National Transonic Facility (NTF) at the NASA Langley Research Center. The model was tested at transonic cruise flight conditions with Reynolds numbers based on mean aerodynamic chord ranging from 10 to 30 million. The goal of the test was to experimentally validate a new design method, referred to as Crossflow Attenuated NLF (CATNLF), which shapes airfoils to have pressure distributions that delay transition on wings with high sweep and Reynolds numbers. Additionally, the test aimed to characterize the NTF laminar flow testing capabilities, as well as establish best practices for laminar flow wind tunnel testing. Preliminary results regarding the first goal of validating the new design method are presented in this paper. Experimental data analyzed in this assessment include surface pressure data and transition images. The surface pressure data acquired during the test agree well with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results. Transition images at a variety of Reynolds numbers and angles of attack are presented and compared to computational transition predictions. The experimental data are used to assess transition due to a turbulent attachment line, as well as crossflow and Tollmien-Schlichting modal instabilities. Preliminary results suggest the CATNLF design method is successful at delaying transition on wings with high sweep.     Water-Based Pressure-Sensitive Paints

    Water-based pressure-sensitive paints (PSPs) have been invented as alternatives to conventional organic-solvent-based pressure-sensitive paints, which are used primarily for indicating distributions of air pressure on wind-tunnel models. Typically, PSPs are sprayed onto aerodynamic models after they have been mounted in wind tunnels. When conventional organic-solvent-based PSPs are used, this practice creates a problem of removing toxic fumes from inside the wind tunnels. The use of water-based PSPs eliminates this problem. The waterbased PSPs offer high performance as pressure indicators, plus all the advantages of common water-based paints (low toxicity, low concentrations of volatile organic compounds, and easy cleanup by use of water)

    Using Pressure- and Temperature-Sensitive Paint for Global Surface Pressure and Temperature Measurements on the Aft-Body of a Capsule Reentry Vehicle

    Pressure Sensitive Paint (PSP) and Temperature Sensitive Paint (TSP) were used to visualize and quantify the surface interactions of reaction control system (RCS) jets on the aft body of capsule reentry vehicle shapes. The first model tested was an Apollo-like configuration and was used to focus primarily on the effects of the forward facing roll and yaw jets. The second model tested was an early Orion Crew Module configuration blowing only out of its forward-most yaw jet, which was expected to have the most intense aerodynamic heating augmentation on the model surface. This paper will present the results from the experiments, which show that with proper system design, both PSP and TSP are effective tools for studying these types of interaction in hypersonic testing environments

Each CNT-based conductor is coupled on one end thereof to the first electrode and extends away from the first electrode to terminate at a second free end.     Space Launch System Booster Separation Supersonic Powered Testing with Surface and Off-Body Measurements

    A wind tunnel test was run in the NASA Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel simulating the separation of the two solid rocket boosters (SRB) from the core stage of the NASA Space Launch System (SLS). The test was run on a 0.9% scale model of the SLS Block 1B Cargo (27005) configuration and the SLS Block 1B Crew (28005) configuration at a Mach of 4.0. High pressure air was used to simulate plumes from the booster separation motors located at the nose and aft skirt of the two boosters. Force and moment data were taken on both SRBs and on the core stage. Schlieren still photos and video were recorded throughout testing. A set of points were acquired using Cross-correlation Doppler Global Velocimetry (CCDGV) readings to get 3 component velocity measurements between the core and the left-hand SRB. The CCDGV laser was utilized to record flow visualization in the same location, between the core and the left-hand SRB. Pressure Sensitive Paint data were taken on a separate set of runs. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) runs were computed on a subset of the wind tunnel data points for comparison. A combination of the force/moment, CCDGV and Pressure Sensitive Paint (PSP) data (as well as schlieren images) at the CFD-specified test conditions will be used te the CFD simulations that will be used to build an SLS booster separation database flight conditions
